A fridge of one's own
After my trip to the market yesterday, I couldn't bear the thought of putting the neatly stacked cartons of blackberries and svelte triumvirate of darkling eggplants into our fridge. Nor the frilly lettuce nor the dark, leathery avocados. No, not with the momento mori still life, "Ode to the demise of a very bland fruit salad" (among other fecund items) bursting into life (death?) on the back shelf. So, with grocery sacks strewn throughout our living room, I pulled every last item from our fridge (the bread heels in long, plastic bags, the half-eaten lime, the ketchup bottle), knelt on the cold tile floor and scrubbed. Like a pregnant Cinderella. I ripped drawer after drawer after shelf and drenched the entire kitchen with my enthusiastic and deadly use of the sink sprayer and suds (hours after, Mike found water hanging from some far cabinet corner and looked at me with arched brow). Now, having finished, having categorized and placed everything back in at right angles, I can't stop staring. All day I peek in to see the glow, to see the quiet, crimson strawberries and long green cucumbers sitting silently in their cool palace.

It's official, you've turned into a 'homemaker'. Welcome to the club!
Love this. No one can describe a vegetable quite like you.
Brings back memories of our "Fridge Review Board."
I've thought longingly of the FRB on many occasions, thought of arranging all of you in my kitchen, asking what you think of my aging black bean burgers--stay or go?
Oh the FRB! That was a good time. I have also pined for those days, myself. Somehow, opening the fridge and knowing that you have to go through all that decision making (is the half greenish-blue half still chedarry orange cheese salvagable? what say you?)alone is almost too much to bear. Well done my lass...I think you've inspired me to tackle my own fridge this very weekend. Love you!
I do miss the FRB. I missed it whilst I was emptying my fridge. I especially wanted some advice on some tofu...it was a dicey decision and I'm not sure I went the right way...tofu is still a mystery to me. When we're all quite tech savvy, we'll have to do live video chats and revive the custom. It would be most helpful...
I say, if you need a FRB you have tackled the job way to soon. If you wait long enough . . . no board is necessary. Frankly, that is how I have simplified my life . . . wait . . . . toss. . . sign!
You are too funny. I LOVE reading your blog.=)
I apologize for neglecting to dutifully comment but I always have the same repetitive things to say: you write wonderfully and I miss you. That whole working for the church thing, though miserable for us both, made me remember how much I like you.
Lovely.
